Well your point would still remain but with the rancher and the people who eat his food rather than the scientists.
Of course if the rancher didn't use it then that might mean less cattle, less food, more people going hungry...
From a predator / prey point of view it seems natural, ants and rancher competing for limited resources.
Though I don't really see it that way; we have the ability to control our actions so we can make efforts to preserve the environments of others where animals do not. (Not that we do very much, but the potential is there and the awareness seems to be increasing again).
I guess I'm just trying to understand your view.
