Pedroia as the AL MVP is an interesting choice, but he was very productive for a 2nd basemen with his .869 OPS and played solid defence to go with it. He was clearly the best player in the AL at that position last year and was a real catalyst for the Red Sox. I think that either Pedroia or Joe Mauer are the two guys who stood out as being significantly better than any other player in the league at his respective position and hence gave his team the most value, on teams that were able to win. Rather than go with a guy like Josh Hamilton who had a big stats year they chose a guy who did seem to give his team an advantage that other teams didn't have.
