Pine trees wreck the lawn? That's news to me. Never have I seen bad lawn around a pine tree.

I don't know if it's pine trees specifically. Trees with needles and pinecones and such falling on the ground don't do good things to the lawn, I know that. "Pine Tree" is I guess a generic term for know-nothings like me to call trees that don't have leaves but needles.
The fallen needles are acidic and/or the trees don't let in enough sunshine or they suck up all the water or something and the lawn dies or just looks bad. Maybe it doesn't work that way somewhere else but if you look at the grass under the branches of a tree with needles around here (Calgary) it doesn't exactly look like the fairway at Augusta.
