Let me add my 2¢ to this one. I know I did give out skill to people who gave away stuff that I received from time to time, but I also gave out skill to others who gave stuff away too. I even had posters PM me to say that somebody deserved skill for taking their offers of help off the board and went above the call of duty. This happened more than once- and the point of skill was to give a sense of community.
Sure, different mods had different ways of handing out skill. That will happen because we are humans and not robots. But when I gave out skill many times it was for one poster helping somebody else; as I spend a significant portion of time in the OT section and notice these things. Whether it was somebody writing a long post to help out a fellow poster, or somebody asking for a "fizzmotron" and another poster saying "I have one just lying around- you can have it"; I would like to have thought it was handed out evenly.
There were a number of posters who routinely pointed out skill worthy posts, and quite often we would act on those.
It wasn't a popularity contest. Otherwise there are a couple of posters who I consider to be good friends; and if it was about poularity they wouldn't have ended up with blue squares at the end of the skill program.
