I was contemplating that myself and I came to the conclusion that City of birth would determine European versus Asian (world) status. Therefore I would have to classify Tolstoy as European because he hails from the technically European side of Russia. Its a shame because I am really racking my brain trying to find a World lit author that I have read. I may have to quickly run out and find an Austrailan book, read and it say it is my favourite world lit because it is the only one I have read. That or I insist that Ondaatje is Sri-Lanken!
