So at the end of the day, we have 200 hours of community service and probation at the punishment for microwaving a cat... Justice is indeed blind...
That said, given the wide range of similar acts in our confessional thread, and presuming that all members here are fine upstanding citizens... are we any better?

That's an interesting point to me. You even notice there being a bias in that thread towards our little furry feline buddies. Several people (unfortunately myself included) admitted to some level of animal abuse when we were kids, yet the one about the cat seemed to resonate more than any other (with me at least).
Really when you look at it biologically there isn't a whole lot different between a cat, a gopher and a frog. However given that we keep cats as pets and their arguably the cutest of the three it seemed to be worse to harm a cat than a frog.
In the case of the microwaved cat I suppose it's different because the animal in question was a pet rather than a wild animal and the means of killing was more disturbing. Also, many of the incidents in the confessions thread were made by kids of young ages (7-10) ... when teenagers start doing stuff like that it seems a little different. Perhaps I'm wrong, but that's how it seems to me.
