I'd also suggest allowing 1 mulligan, where if someone has no pick for a category, they can sub in any other book they want as another wild card. For example, I've never read a graphic novel, so I would be greatly disadvantaged in that category.
People seem happy with octothorp's categories. I do like your idea for a "mulligan".
