The thing that worked for King of the Hill is that you have a conservative, bull-headed southerner who deals with a clash of cultures almost every episode. If he's not dealing with liberals or immigrants, he's trying to put up with his non-athletic son, emotional basketcase niece or his headstrong wife.
I think this is the formula that makes it work well; it isn't a show about a southerner for Southerners; it's a half-hour commentary on how American social values are changing. Mike Judge scored a winner on this one.
