That's What She Said would like to call to the podium a true cinema classic - the zany yet endearing
Bringing Up Baby, in the
Black & White category. It was one of those screwball comedies from the 30's that didn't need to make sense, it worked because the characters draw you in - no matter how implausible the story becomes.
The story stars Susan (Katherine Hepburn) and David (Cary Grant) - two people who you would never put together but who come together out of determination (Susan's), necessity (David's) and luck. David is a paleontologist about to marry a fellow scientist, looking to bring in a grant to his museum and desperately seeking the final bone to finish putting together a Brontosaurus skeleton that he has worked on for the last four years. Susan meets David, and believing he's a zoologist rather than a paleontologist, pretty much stalks him to get him to come home with her and help her deal with Baby - a tame leopard sent by her brother as a gift. In all the action, Susan decides she loves David and does her best to keep him with her and away from his fiancee. Hijinks ensue when the bone is found (& lost), a wild leopard is mistaken for Baby and a sheriff claps them all in jail because he knows something sneaky is going on. If you have a chance, check it out on TMC or rent it some night when you want a fun, fluffy movie to eat popcorn in front of!
