According to the DVD, and Wikipedia, the band rehearsed for two days prior, cause of their grungy, harder sound. They had no idea what the songs would turn out to be.
Through the 3 days, Cobain was said to have been in quite the sour mood, but the guy was an emotional wreck well before that, with the fame and pressure he would give into just a few months later.
