There was this Veteran at the safeway who was putting the poppy on my wife. She was wearing a zip-up hoody and he pretty much just unzipped half her shirt to show her how to put it on. He put it through the shirt but didn't push the pin all the way through, rather sliding the poppy down the pin and putting the end of the pin through the poppy in the same way evman150 explained.
He pretty much molested my wife in public, but he was a vetran and his poppy application is nearly flawless, so he's cool.
I believe there's also the rule that the poppy is to come off after 11:00 am on the 11th. I've heard breaking the rule is similar to the poppy on the right rule ... it can be considered disrespectful, but in the end it's far more important to be wearing one in the first place.
edit: Poor example ... according to the Veteran's Affairs website the poppy can be worn year round.
