Beautiful story, beautiful scenery and beautiful sport. There is nothing that I don't like about this film. Adapted from Norman Maclean's book, it is the story of two Montana brothers and the different paths their lives take in 1920's Montana. This film won the 1993 Oscar for best cinematography and was shot on location in and around Livingston and Bozeman, MT though the story takes place in Missoula.
This is one of Brad Pitt's finest performances in a career that I think includes many fine performances. His portrayal of Paul Maclean is beautiful, in a way. He is a man consumed by demons, and the grandeur of his homeland. Pitt really makes that come through on screen.
The movie was directed and narrated by Robert Redford, and he was great in both roles.
Perhaps the best thing about this movie is the beautifully shot flyfishing scenes. All real.
Honestly, this is one of my top 5 movies of all time. I love it that much. I don't expect it to rank that highly for others as no doubt much of my affinity for it comes from the commonality of being madly in love with the part of the world I was born in (similarly to Paul Maclean) and my love of getting lost in the majesty of the Rocky Mountains and the love of family.
I highly recommend Maclean's books.
