R. Lee Emery was an 11 year Marine, he rose to the rank of Staff Seargent.# He was hired on as a technical advisor for Apocalypse Now, but was so good that they hired him into the role.

He wrote most of his own lines on full metal jacket because he actually did act as a DI on the Island.

He admitted that there wasn't very much exageration to the role, but that the Marine training regime has changed a great deal.

Yup that movie confirmed to me that going in the Army would be my absolute personal hell when I was growing up. I had nightmares as a kid of being in the army.
Slightly off-topic but...

Some of us will remember when every house didn't have a VCR and renting some movies and the VCR was a staple of the youngster's birthday party/sleepover.

One time someone I know had Dad go down to the Video Station and pick up a 75 pound VCR and a few random movies for the kiddies to watch. It was the Birthday Party for a 10 year-old girl but Dad was new to this rental thing and didn't know much about movies so he got Full Metal Jacket.

So he plugged it in and soon enough a room full of little girls was watching that movie. I wasn't there but apparently it was a very quiet viewing and it induced a few tears. The dad had done his job and he left the room so the kids could watch their little movie and it ran for quite a while before an alert older brother figured that maybe they shouldn't be watching Gomer Pyle kill himself or hear stories about Mary Jane Rottencrotch so they got the movie stopped and brought out the Care-Bears birthday cake. I remember renting a VCR from the Red Rooster...
