Having had some further play and thought about this if you're faced with an odd man situation behind the net, the best option is to force the puck into the corner, and hope for extra support by way of one of the forwards coming down from the top of the box, to help out the corner, or that side's D-Man helping you out. Either way, you should be able to force the puck carrier to lose control so you can either chase the puck or knock it to a friendly.

However, it only works if you have somebody actively chasing the puck carrier. Normally that's a forward out there hunting them down, leaving the defence to concentrate on clearing the slot, and taking care of the down low play, because the comp goalie doesn't know how to hug the near post properly.

Eventually, you want the D on the opposition team handling the puck as it can provide half a rink breakaways for an enterprising forward.
