It probably has to do a lot with how you personally deal with issues like this in real life with your own friends.
Personally in situations like this with people that I am friends with it would be assumed that it was free if I were offered or offering. Therefore, form my viewpoint I couldn't imagine even asking for money from a friend when offering the ticket, let alone waiting until after the game. That is just how it works with the friends that I have dealt with in this type of situation.
While it may not work that way with everyone I still do think that if you are offering the ticket up to someone you should be clear what the ticket costs so that said person can decide if they want/can go. It should be assumed to be complimentary because the person making the offer never mentioned money when asking you if you wanted to attend.
