It's offensive to people that are mentally challenged and people of assocation. If they don't like that word, what gives you the right to use it besides being ignorant and self-centered? You need to catch up with the times.
The word is just as offense as racial and cultural slurs. I know this from knowing many people from different races, cultures and various mental disabilities. Go up to a parent with a mentally challenged kid, use that work and find out. You'll get similar respsonses.
