Yes I'm serious, and you need to be realistic. The reason they are referred to as "mentally handicapped" or "mentally ######ed", is because
they are. Spin their deficiency any way you like (learn differently? pfft), but they still have a genuine handicap. The sooner you recognize this, then the sooner you can address their needs appropriately, rather than living in a world of denial.
While prematurely advancing a failing student into the next year may assuage parent anxiety/shame, it does a serious disservice to the actual student. Holding a student back so that they can learn properly, and at their own pace, is never the wrong thing to do.
And it seems like your "educaion" is the real joke...
