The farmer's market is a great place to go to eat or shop or just hang out. There's an amazing brazilian rotissary place there in the food stalls.

You're also not that far via transit from the Getty Center.
And going the other way, at the east end of Sunset Blvd is the Silver Lake area, which has some great offbeat shops and boutiques, including the world's most elegant comic book shop, Secret Headquarters. Also check out Reform School and Giant Robot and a fantastic cheese store, the name of which escapes me, also in the Silver Lake area.

For something a little more oddball and wonderful, there's the Museum of Jurassic Technologies, which includes, among other things, a portrait gallery of Dogs of the Russian Space Program.

Those are pretty much all my favorite spots in LA. It's actually a great city with some amazing places; it's just the getting around that sucks.
