Somewhat similar, but not really.

KOTOR is has a very innovative turn-based real-time combat system. It's still turn based (ie; Final Fantasy, etc.), but you can move your character around and the combat doesn't stop after every "round" (meaning you can just put in your attack commands on the fly). I'd definitely get KOTOR 1 before KOTOR 2.

Morrowind's combat system is based almost completely on stats. If you have a low longsword skill it takes you about 6 or 7 swings to even hit your opponent. Personally I don't mind it as the focus of the game doesn't revolve around combat, but many people are turned off on the game because of this. Morrowind is one of my favorite games of all time so I highly recommend it, but I'd suggest renting it first. Be sure to play for at least five or more hours if you do rent it as the game is very slow at the start.

I haven't played Jade Empire yet, but it's made by the same people who made KOTOR (not KOTOR 2). It's basically supposed to be an improved KOTOR set in a world similar to that of China. I've heard nothing, but good things about it.
