I went to the optometrist two years ago. This old school guy near Brentwood. I asked about contacts and he charged me a bunch of money for some tests. He put weird drops in my eyes, cardboard thingies behind my eyelids and a couple other strange tests. Afterwards he told me my eyes were too dry and I'll never be able to wear contact lenses.

A couple months later I was reading a malpractice suit that went to the SCC. The defendant was an optometrist with the same name as guy above who, at the time of the decision, was working at market mall. Putting two and two together (he lost btw) I went to another optometrist known and trusted by a friend.

This second optometrist used more modern methods and seemed really on top of the scene (she actually read the literature out there and seemed really up to date in her training). She laughed when I told her my story and said it's not uncommon for old optometrists to do everything short of absolutely refusing to deal with contact lenses. Plus, she added, that new lens technology mean that even people with really dry eyes can wear contacts. I've been using disposables now for almost a year and have had no problems. I don't wear them every day but it's never been a problem the few times a week I do. Sports are so much better now...

Long story short: it never hurts to get a second opinion.
