The nuclear power plant was a prime example of the end game in chess where your opponent has you completely sewn up and you know it. You look to do a castle swich but that keeps your king in trouble, you can't move anywhere because he's got every angle covered. The only thing that you can do is tip your king and start a new game.
If you look at it that way, then the new T-1001 is a queen to skynets king, and John Conner is the king on the other side of the board, Sarah is the queen who might need to be sacrificed to win the game and Cameron is the castle that might be called in to sacrifice to save the king.
