I have to chuckle a little bit at this.
For years, that was the knock against EA: the lack of innovation from year to year. It was like, as you said, they simply update the roster and release a $60 patch each year. The 2K series began nipping at their heels and some would argue even surpassed EA.
Then along came NHL 08 and, at least on the two next gen systems, it represented a quantum leap forward. I've never played a better video hockey game. Although it had its faults, it was nonetheless superb.
Now EA adds an ambitious new Be A Player mode and tweaks other areas of the game and people complain. How quickly we forget.
I don't mean any of this as a knock against you personally. Before EA thumbed its nose at PC and Nintendo gamers (we exist, I promise) I complained about the exact same things. In a lot of cases, especially with the PC and Nintendo editions, the complaints were probably justified.
