Trailer...
Richard Dreyfuss stars as Roy Neary an electrical lineman who has a late-night encounter (of the first kind) with a strange light in the sky. This leads to an encounter of the second kind, when he chases three strange ships that have been flying along the road. Soon, Roy becomes obsessed with his encounters as well as a strange flat-topped pillar he can't get out of his mind (or his mashed potatoes). Roy's wife (Teri Garr) becomes concerned about his behaviour, and eventually leaves him, taking their three children with her.
One day, Roy sees a news report from Devil's Tower Monument in Wyoming and recognizes it as the strange shape that has been burned into his mind. Roy decides to go to Wyoming, where he's sure something big is about to happen. In Wyoming, Roy finds he is not alone in his pilgrimage, joined by other people who have had similar encounters, as well as members of the US government who have prepared a welcoming committee for the alien visitors.
Eventually, the mothership arrives, and Roy gets to experience the third type of encounter...
