The other question I have now is if collisions of greater magnitude happen in the Earth's atmosphere all the time, then how is this different? Is it just easier to observe with the machine they built, or is this slightly different?

As you enter the event horizon of the blackhole time relative to the outside world should slow down. So if I was looking at you in the blackhole it would look like time was moving really slowly but to you time would be passing at normal speed.
