Are the 200 additional officers they're hiring going to be patrol cops on the street or investigative teams specializing in gangs and organized crime? If the former, I agree with the OP -- an additional 66 cops on the street per 8-hour shift spread all over the city isn't going to make a lick of difference in curbing gang violence. If it's the latter, though, then it could prove to be money well spent.
This just appears to be a knee-jerk reaction to the recent killings to make it look like City Hall is doing something.
