I bought it in 03 or 04, I can't remember. So, it's not terribly old, but not terribly new either. But it's not worth bringing in somewhere to be fixed.
I figure it's a lost cause, I don't think it can be fixed, but I thought I would post this anyways, in the off chance someone knows what is wrong with it, and maybe has some miracle cure.

Called a vertical collapse.
Sounds like your vertical IC is cooked....if you are handy with a soldering iron, you can try re-soldering the contacts and if that doesnt work you can replace the IC for proabably less than 30 bucks...so it is fixable but having someone else do it will likely be cost prohibitive.
