Wouldnt "80's clothing" be correct, since its in reference to clothing "owned" by the 80s?

On a side note, I agree that extraneous apostrophies should be avoided, and I go one step further and do not use unnessesary apostrophies. For example, you're can be youre, and dont, wont, cant, havent, etc all make sence without the tick.

I'm, he's, he'd etc need an apostrophie though, since Im, hes and hed do not look the same and can lead to confusion. I know some people will disagree with this, but I feel they are unnessesary.
