Listen to the albums dude. They progressively get slower and heavier, going for thicker guitars and more melodic solos and stepping away from the rapid, all out thrash. Black was the next logical step after Justice. Load and Reload were a new path to be trodden.

...and, again, Metallica wasn't just about loud guitars and speed riffs. They were about long, complex symphonies and musical arrangements. Listening to an old-school Metallica album is like listening to an opera... just very, very, very heavy. THAT's the Metallica that I would love to hear something new from.
The Black Album marked their departure from that. THAT's what pissed off all their fans.
Edit: Anyway. I'm done with this. This argument has been going on for 17 years. I'm not the only person on the planet that feels this way, either. That's a promise.
