I am a firm believer that something 'special' is the cause of them but I don't think anyone knows for sure how the heck they are made. Anyone who thinks they are ALL made by people during the night are crazy. Some of the intricate ones would be impossible to create by a human IMO.

Impossible?
We've seen exactly how they do it, its not only humanly possible, but really not that hard if you bothered to see the truth before your eyes.
Yes its more fun to imagine some great power doing it, aliens, gnomes, or whatever you want to imagine.
But this stuff is simply and quite clearly the work of artists.
Why do you want to imagine it to be anything else?
