When I went through this a few weeks ago, I found a recipe online that works great. It's one bottle of hydrogen peroxide, half a cup of baking soda and a few tablespoons of dish soap. It should create a frothy mixture. Rub it all over your dog and wait 10 minutes, then rinse it out.

My guess is if you can smell it in the house, your dog got sprayed--at least a little. Did you let the dog in right away after it happened?
