I also have a first generation and on a rainy week, I'll charge it once and that's it.

(During sunny weeks, I take it to the pool with me and play music over the internal speaker.... that *REALLY* eats the battery)

But listening with headphones on.... I started Monday at 8:30, left at 5:30 and had it playing the whole time. Expected it to be near dead but there was nary a dent in the power.

What I have learned is that you ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS go back to the main menu before shutting it down for the night. I've had a few times when I just paused the music and hit the button on top and went to bed only to find a completely no-responsive unit in the morning. Even if I want to put on some Enya before falling asleep - Find Song, Play, Exit to Main Menu, Click Top Button.
