It's the constant turning on and off of the 3G that kills it. As I understand, it puts the 3G to "sleep" when not in use to save battery life. Having it check emails every 15 minutes will kill the battery.

I found that leaving push enabled kills the battery too. I don't know exactly how it works but it stands to reason that push on an exchange server (which I was using) would require the iPhone to be connected to the net constantly, which is expensive power-wise.

Battery life is actually very good disabling those things.

I thought a true "Push" server would have to use your phone number to send a non-data message to your phone notifying it of a new message, eliminating the need to be constantly connected to the internet. Anyone else know?
