We've got two similar to what Bagor posted, great units IMO. Work well for keeping a bedroom cool so that you can sleep.

Almost every single apartment in China has these things in multiple rooms. We have 3 in our appartment. They are not too big, mounted up high on the wall and are much cheaper than those portable A/C's I see on the Home Depot website. They have timer controls, remotes, some are CE approved and cool a room down quickly.
Maybe it's because the fan for them is quite large and must be mounted on the outside of the building and the city bylaws would not allow it?
