Mostly its all BS, its just as easy to suggest Booze is the gateway drug to illegal drugs.
There is a taboo due to misinformation about drugs, so often when kids try weed they realize they've been lied to and then start to distrust what they've been told about other drugs.
I can tell you from my experience, the vast majority of my friends who smoked pot, did mushrooms, or even some who did hash, did not end up trying cocaine, heroin, or any other hard drug.
Mushrooms are in fact pretty much the safest drug you can do, the only danger comes to what you do while on them which is easy to prepare for in advance or for mentally unstable people who shouldn't be using them in the first place.
DARE has propogated so much misinformation for so long, its very hard to combat their bad information.
I'd always suggest honest to our kids over lies, since if they find out we were lying to them about drugs, they would be more likely to try other drugs besides more benign ones like MJ or Mushrooms.
