I used to fence, and it is a lot tougher than it looks. It requires a good deal of leg strength, core strength, stamina and skill. It is also a very traditional (and noble) event.
Having said that, it can be boring to watch if you are a casual observer, and not in touch with all the nuances etc. Kind of like a lot of Americans trying to watch ice hockey.
