Plus at the last winter Olympics, the Canadian guy who medalled was a firefighter from Calgary. Obviously if you have a regular full-time job, the training regime must not be that time consuming or difficult.

Or perhaps athletes get such poor funding that they need full time jobs to scrape by. Firefighting would be a perfect job because you could sit around and work out at work 95% of the time, and your schedule would be in some sort of 4-on 4-off format.
