Honestly, that's something that pisses me off, the characterization of any animal as innocent. As if human virtues have any meaning when applied to animals. It's not innocent, in the same way that a bear who acts savagely to protect its young is not guilty of anything. People have such a desire for a story like this to have a happy ending; they want to believe that urban development can exist harmoniously with nature. It can't. But it's no more or less a tragedy than the many (I want to say hundreds, but really I have no idea) moose that get killed on highways every year.
