Well, if you look at the back of the cover of Kill Em All, they're all pictured in a black and white portrait. This was in the mid 80s. In the mid 90s, they did the S&M Concert with the San Fransisco Symphony (their BEST concert...Hetfield actually learned how to sing!) and he was still skinny then too.

Then some time after Some Kind of Monster came out I saw a tribute show on some music channel where all these young bands like Avril Lavigne and Limpbizkit and the like were all playing Metallica covers while Metallica was in the house. Of course, at the end, they get up and play (Sad But True, Hero of the Day, and Enter Sandman...what else? yawn...).

In this show, James must be so roided up it's scary. He looked a lot like a wrestler! His was a mass of muscle...arms, legs, neck...all of it. One cannot quit alcohol & cocaine and then go put that kind of freakish weight and build on without roids.

And as far as the music goes...Metallica were cool because they wrote songs about cool things (Ride the Lightning is all about different ways to die !) because they had cool opinions/positions on a lot of important issues.

When the original sheer force of will that I felt oozing out of every note is replaced by complacency, pettiness (how they treated Newstead, the napster thing), and the need to make a movie about them getting therapy is weak and lame, it is totally undermining of everything I thought was "cool" about them.
