I'm a foreman for a treeplanting company out in BC during the summer (still out in the bush as we speak). We encounter bears almost on a daily basis, mostly black.
Last year on a helicopter cut block I walked over the crest of a hill and found myself within 20 feet of a huge black bear. He stood up on his hind legs several times, we just kind of stared at eachother for a few seconds. He eventually left but kept coming back throughout the day. Luckily for me, I'm the designated gun guy in camp so I just had my gun flown in just in case.
Later that same day a massive grizzly walked onto the block (definitely a grizzly). I fired off some warning shots to try and scare him away but he didn't even flinch. That one was scary.
Two planters on my crew this year ALMOST planted right between a mother and her cubs. Luckily they were warned about 30 feet before they got that far.
Kind of off topic, but any treeplanters on CP?
