Just an addition to Photon's comments.

The wire coming from the Cable modem should plug into the "WAN" or "Internet" port on your router. If your router is a couple of years old, you may have an "Uplink" port. You don't want to use this one.

If, once you get the wire into the correct port, this error still occurs, simply unplug the power supply from the back of your router, count to 14 (but not too fast) then plug it back in. This should reset the router without losing any settings that you may have changed.
