This was already mentioned, but you need to check job application instructions. They are not necessarily attached to the job ad itself -- some employers may have info about submitting job applications on their websites.
I received resumes that were scanned to PDF in the past and some of them looked like crap. If you end up sending a PDF file, make sure it looks presentable when printed out.
