So Telus should take the extra cost out of their wallet instead without a guarantee from you that you will remain with them after they shell out that extra money, already on top of the discount they gave you when you originally signed up? Cell phones cost a lot of money to make.

Nobody forced you to sign a 3 year contract, you did it so you get the discount associated with the hardware. There were also discounts on 2 year and 1 year contracts, not to mention that if you buy phone without a contract period Telus still sells it for less than they paid for it. I know plenty of people, myself included, whose phones have lasted 3 years and much longer.
