Like wookie mentioned, having a gym that is convenient is key. Getting to the gym every day can be difficult with work and family commitments. Making it as easy as possible for your self is important when you want to stick to your routine. Most gyms will let you try them out for free. Take your stuff, stop in and tell them your looking to join a gym. They will probably give you a tour and let you work out.
I would also highly recommend a personal trainer. I worked out for years without one. I lost weight and put on a lot of muscle. At the same time I also screwed up my shoulder with poor form on some exercises. Also I was afraid to perform certain exercises because I didn't want to injure myself, squats and dead lifts for example. For about the last two years I was also in a big rut or plateau.
My wife signed me up for a personal trainer that uses their own facility. Basically it is a gym but you can't just buy a membership and workout. You can only workout there if you have an appointment with a trainer. I think they are up to seven trainers now. It was the best money I have ever spent on health and fitness. In 3 months I lost 10.5 inches and only lost 5 pounds. I feel and look great.
When you find a gym. Ask about personal trainers. You may have to spend a couple hundred to get started. But it will be well worth the money.
