I have an deck thats about 10 years old. The deck surface is starting to get into rougher shape. The decking is 5/4 X 5 pressure treated wood. The ends of the planks appear to be getting dry rot and there appears to be damage (dry rot) around some of the screws holding down the planks.

Are these planks salvagable at all? The joist appear to be in great shape. Ive done a thorough inspection and it looks good. Ive removed planks and there appears to be no dry rot or anyother damage to the structure.

Is it possible to salvage any of these planks? Or once dry rot starts should I toss them so I dont risk the dry rot spreading. Ive done a bit of research and it seems some people say it can be saved and restored. Id like to replace as few planks as possible.

Anyone have any experience with this?

Also, if the structure is sound, do I need a building permit if I want to replace the entire decking surface?

I also dont know if this deck ever had a building permit or inspection in the first place. If it hasnt, and a permit is needed for repairs, am I better to not apply for a permit?

Any help is appreciated.

(Safety of the structure is important but Id rather not replace the entire deck if I dont have too.)
