I always thought that Carlin really softened up and mellowed out in his older age compared to his rage comedy when he first came out. In terms of comediens he and Lenny Bruce and Andy Kaufmen were giants in the world of shock and confrontational comedy, maybe you could add Sam Kinison (sp?) to that group as well.
