The same thing happened to me. It's not happened in a while and I still use firefox but that is one of the most annoying bugs that I've ever had to deal with.
As far as the problem goes I would download CWShredder and run that. I'm thinking that it might be a variant of the CoolWebSearch problem. Available from this link that was mentioned above:
