Sorry to hear this happened to your dad. I've heard several stories similar to yours. Indians would come up, ask for change, and if you refused, they would knock you in the head in a special Indian way, and you would lose consciousness while they took your belongings. It seems Indians have a talent for hitting someone just so, so they lose consciousness.
