On topic: Spikes which grow upwards out of your ice cube trays are formed when water is pushed upwards and to the centre of the cube as ice (which is less dense than water) forms on the periphery of the cube. The spike is actually a tube which forms as water continues to freeze from the outside in, pushing water up the middle of the tube.
It's more likely to happen if you use distilled water rather than tap water to make your ice cubes.
