Well if it can help something jump further, or fall less quickly, or hold onto branches in strong winds better.. or anything really where it would give a survival advantage it would be selected for.

Flight's evolved separately four times that we know of, insects were earliest, but I don't think they know how it evolved as well as they do for birds.
