I don't think many of them actually started boxing when they were 7. Most decent MMA guys probably started wrestling when they were 12.

You can say the same thing about boxing. There are million tomato cans out there. Any MMA guy who is tough and knows a couple ground moves isn't going to be anywhere near the MMA we see on TV. Just like the Palooka who thinks he can box because he beat some guys up in a parking lot will never actually get anywhere.
Anyone can put on a set of gloves and call himself a boxer, just like anyone can put on a different set of gloves and call himself an MMA fighter. It doesn't mean they are.

No it couldn't. Where do you get this impression? From Kimbo Slice? He doesn't represent anything. He's a sideshow. If you look at him and think "that's an MMA fighter", then I can look at Butterbean and say "that's a world class boxer".
And the other suggestion that MMA fans are just in it for the scrapping -- of course. But you aren't going to convince me that 95% of boxing fans aren't hoping for a knockout in every fight they watch.
